Today we are taking you to historic Newton Upper Falls - another one of Newton's villages along the Charles!! Also known for its mills in the 1600s, it's home to some wonderful trails and fun restaurants, and also very commuter friendly being right off Route 9 and the highways. In the pandemic, we explored so many new spots and walking trails!
Newton's first mills were built in 1688 in Newton Upper Falls.
There is a famous pothole on Sullivan Avenue, not the kind you avoid with your car! Still, a geological anomaly where a boulder initially pushed down the cliff by a now extinct waterfall got caught and became round. The boulder spun around in its place, carving a shaft over thousands of years.
There's some popular restaurants including the Biltmore Bar & Grill, which has a fabulous patio, and Dunn Gaherin’s, an Irish pub beloved by the locals.
It's home to tons of walking trails and nature, including Hemlock Gorge & Echo Bridge, a very cool bridge over the falls where you can yell and it echoes into the gorge! Also the Upper Falls Greenway, a part of the Bay Colony Rail Trail Project whose goal is to someday rival the Minuteman with its connecting trails!
Today, you can also find Needham St - a growing shopping mecca that has everything from Marshalls, HomeGoods, an upscale Stop & Shop, a DD & Starbucks, and of course our Fleet Homes favorite, Pressed!
The Friends of Hemlock Gorge was established in the 90s to help preserve and improve the Gorge and the surrounding area.
It's a close knit community and in prior years they've hosted an annual winter skating party at New Pond, full of music, skating and BYOHC (Bring Your Own Hot Chocolate!) - how fun!
