Welcome to Oak Hill, the next stop on our tour of Newton villages! Oak Hill is a suburban part of Newton that abuts Needham & West Roxbury and is most notably known for "Oak Hill Park", the village within the village! This part of Newton saw much of its growth after World War 2 and today is both a hub of rich remembrance and new development.
Oak Hill Park was built by the city of Newton for the returning GIs after World War II in a time when there was a shortage in housing. It started with 412 houses built on a gravel quarry, and is considered a "living memorial" - one of the first things that Veterans Housing Dept did was name the 33 streets & paths in the neighborhood after Newton servicemen who had died in the war.
Today, with so many smaller homes built on large lots, it's a neighborhood prime for developers with an influx of new construction homes being built - although in 1948 when the first of these homes was completed, the cost of the "basic house" was $7,820!!
You can find many walking trails to places like Millenium Park and Oak Hill Parkway, a public access path to the top of the hill where you can look down on the Charles River Valley and the Blue Hills.
It's home to Newton Community Farm, Newton's last working farm where you can buy locally grown produce & attend events like its annual "Spring Seedling Sale" & fun gardening events.
Mount Ida College, which had originally opened in 1899 as a girls high school in Newton Corner and re-opened after the Great Depression in Oak Hill, is now a UMass campus and sits in the middle of the village.
Along Nahanton St you can find the famous JCC (Jewish Community Center) & the Charles River Country Club, a prestigious (but unfortunately private!) golf course dating back over 100 years!
